Steve Halliday

From the editor's desk!

Welcome to the latest issue of the High Tech AIDCourier.

Here we are again, with another issue. This one is more timely and not quite the gigantic issue that last month's was. The readership of the newsletter is growing steadily and we have improved the sign up process for the newsletter (along with the unsubscribe). See the note at the bottom of the email for details on how to unsubscribe. Feel free to pass the issue along to your friends/co-workers etc. They can sign up for their own copy at http://www.hightechaid.com.

This month we see no reduction in the number of news items on RFID. It seems that we have reached a critical mass with the press and there is at least one an article every day. The problem we are seeing is that there is still a lack of understanding in many of these articles. Just yesterday I saw a picture of an EAS tag being quoted as an RFID tag. If you find that you and/or your company don't have the technical knowledge that you need, let us know, we have educational forums to suit many situations.

As always, providing this newsletter is just a part of what we have to offer here at High Tech Aid. When your problem needs have you overwhelmed, then you need to get help and that is why we are here. We specialize in education, but the spectrum of services is much greater than that. Call or email us for more information. Visit the web site www.hightechaid.com for more information on basic technology details as well as many other things.

E-mail me at news@hightechaid.com and tell us what you think. Don’t forget to send this issue to your friends so that they can sign up for their own issue of the free newsletter at www.hightechaid.com. If you have news to share or info you need, let me know at news@hightechaid.com.

RFID Standards

The work on standards continues to move forward. Two new ISO standards this month are ISO/IEC 15961/2 which detail the data requirements for an ISO compliant RFID tag. As usual you can get the standards from your local ISO National Body (ANSI, BSI, etc.).

Two items of news on the UHF (860 - 960 MHz) regulatory front this month. Last month we saw the approval in Europe of better bandwidth and power for UHF. This month we see Japan and Singapore adding UHF bandwidth to allow the tags to operate there (see the news release below for Singapore). The bad news is that the spurious mask for Japan is not good and U.S. products will not operate in Japan.

We are still waiting for the ratification of the EPCglobal™ Class 1 generation 2 UHF specification. However, some good news this month is that Intermec has agreed to suspend any action to protect its IP for 60 days. This gives the various manufacturers a chance to create artifacts so that the spec. can be validated and then ratified by the Board of Governors without fear of retribution. However, we don't know what happens after the 60 days.

If you want more information on ISO standardization or on any issue of RFID standardization, then email steve@hightechaid.com.
