Steve Halliday

From the editor's desk!

Welcome to the latest issue of the High Tech AIDCourier.

As you will have noticed, there was no issue of the newsletter last month. Travel and sickness conspired against me such that it just never got finished. So this month we will catch up on some important missed news as well as the latest news. In order to get you all the news, this month's issue is split into two parts. Make sure you take a look at both. RSS subscribers will need to go to the web site. Part 2 is available here.

An extra bonus this month is an editorial from Parul Oswal, Research Analyst, Smart Cards and Auto-ID, Frost & Sullivan Asia Pacific. I hope you enjoy it.

Don't forget we still have a sponsorship slot open. Just send me an email to news@hightechaid.com for details.

Providing this newsletter is just a part of what we have to offer here at High Tech Aid. When your problem needs have you overwhelmed, then you need to get help and that is why we are here. We specialize in education, but the spectrum of services is much greater than that. Call or email us for more information. Visit the web site www.hightechaid.com for more information on basic technology details as well as many other things.

E-mail me at news@hightechaid.com and tell us what you think. Don’t forget to send this issue to your friends so that they can sign up for their own issue of the free newsletter at www.hightechaid.com. If you have news to share or info you need, let me know at news@hightechaid.com.

Australia RFID Applications

The Australian market for RFID is currently small in the global landscape. Although interest in RFID is growing, shipments in Australia have not soared to the levels suppliers previously expected. The uptake of RFID in Australia has been slow to date because there has been no pressure on Australian industry to implement RFID technology to comply with government legislation and or market channel requirements such as Wal-Mart. High cost and uncertainty of ROI, lack of education and skill-set, privacy and security concerns from consumers and difficulty in integration with back-end segments are the key factors that have restrained the growth in the market. The industry is taking a number of steps to raise awareness, develop standards, drive adoption, and lower prices in the RFID market. Emerging developments in standards, advances in the ultra high frequency technology and growth in new applications using RFID technology are expected to drive growth in Australia in the future. RFID is used in five main applications in Australia – Security/ access control, animal tracking, transportation, manufacturing and logistics and other applications, with security/access control and animal identification being the main applications comprising 60 percent of the market. RFID Standards

The main reason for the lack of newsletter last month was the volume of standards meetings that were taking place. Several of these meetings are working on projects that should be of interest to everyone. The standards meetings included:

The ISO workgroup that I convene spent two days looking at air-interface standards for RFID. The ISO 18000 series of standards are all published and available from ISO, but the committee is looking at taking the standards to the next level. This will include revisions in all of the various parts of the standard. Some of these revisions will be simple editorial things, others will be changes/corrections found necessary by people trying to implement the standard. There will even be some major revisions. Part 6 (UHF) is already in the final stages of a major amendment to bring the EPCglobal Class 1 Gen 2 specification into the standard. Other major changes which will impact all the various parts include the implementation of battery and sensor support into the air interface. Work has started and we hope to start releasing documents for review early in 2006.

Other standards groups that are moving in the world of RFID include the conformance and performance standards for the 18000 air interfaces. The performance document is currently a Technical report but work has started to make this a full ISO Standard. Work on the non-published parts of the conformance standard (18047) is moving rapidly ahead and should be complete soon.

Other ISO meetings include the work of the Real Time Locating Systems group (SC31/WG5). This group has been concentrating on an API and a standard at 2.4 GHz. As these two documents reach the final voting stages, new work on 433 MHz systems and a Global Locating System using satellite communications is starting.

Finally the EPCglobal™ work group that is looking at the requirements of Item Level Tagging is beginning to have a grasp on the requirements and hopes to have a document to release in the coming months.

If you want more information on ISO standardization or on any issue of RFID standardization, then email steve@hightechaid.com
