From the editor's desk!

Welcome to the latest issue of the High Tech AIDCourier.

We welcome a new sponsor to the newsletter this month. TagSys RFID is a name that many of you will have heard. The company produces a range of RFID products and are very active in the HF arena. Visit their web site at http://www.tagsysrfid.com/ to see what they offer.

Another busy month and, even though we had a holiday in the middle the news seems to keep coming in. This month we have already participated in several standards making activities and it doesn’t look as if there is going to be any slow down in 2006. in fact, I think 2006 looks like being a bumper year for RFID and some of the other AIDC technologies.

Some of you may have heard that the legal actions brought against Lemelson have finally been judged and we have just heard that legal counsel for Lemelson have announced they will not appeal http://aidc100.org/fileadmin/Articles/
Lemelson_no_further_appeal.pdf.

The RFID world is pushing ahead with the news that Wal-Mart is now accepting Gen2 tags, more vendors are coming on line with Gen2, the ISO version of Gen2 (ISO/IEC 18000-6 AM1) is about to enter its final ballot, and item level tagging is being reviewed. Certainly an exciting year ahead of us.

Don’t forget to send the newsletter to your friends and encourage them to sign up. Just forward this issue to a couple of your colleagues and suggest they sign up on the web site.

Providing this newsletter is just a part of what we have to offer here at High Tech Aid. When your problem needs have you overwhelmed, then you need to get help and that is why we are here. We specialize in education, but the spectrum of services is much greater than that. Call or email us for more information. Visit the web site www.hightechaid.com for more information on basic technology details as well as many other things.

E-mail me at news@hightechaid.com and tell us what you think. Don’t forget to send this issue to your friends so that they can sign up for their own issue of the free newsletter at www.hightechaid.com. If you have news to share or info you need, let me know at news@hightechaid.com.

Technology News Briefs

RFID Standards

Standards meeting of MH10.8 (the Material Handling Institute of America’s committee that standardizes package labeling) and of EPCglobal™ have already taken place in 2006. The MH10.8 committee has just finished work on a standard for RFID for Parcels packages and Flat Mail, as well as standards for labeling in other packages. It is also the U.S. Technical Advisory Group to ISO TC122 where the 17363-7 group of RFID Application standards are being created.

EPCglobal™’s meeting of the Hardware Action Group had wide ranging conversations from the use of UHF technologies in the European regulatory environment, to item level tags, to higher classes of tags for use with batteries and sensors.

If you need more specific information on any of this work, let me know.

If you want more information on ISO standardization or on any issue of RFID standardization, then email steve@hightechaid.com

TAGSYS Announces Comprehensive Line Of RFID Conveyor Tunnel Readers
Jan 23, 2006

La Penne sur Huveaune, France — January 23, 2006 – TAGSYS, the global leader in item-level RFID infrastructure, today announced the availability of a new line of item-level RFID conveyor tunnel readers. Based on TAGSYS’ Reliable, Accurate and Secure (R.A.S) item-level RFID technology, the tunnels offer the logistics and manufacturing industry an unprecedented level of read accuracy performance of over 99.99% in asset tracking of RFID tagged articles. TAGSYS has deployed over fifty high-frequency (HF) item-level RFID tunnels for leading global pharmaceutical, consumer electronics, fashion and industrial laundry enterprises.
The patented tunnels utilize optimally positioned and shielded RFID antennas that are linked to TAGSYS’ 13.56 MHz Medio™ L200 RFID readers. The tunnels are able to read multiple tagged items, each with a unique identification number, as they pass through on the conveyor, regardless of the item’s physical orientation. At a standard conveyor speed of 30 fpm, the tunnel reader instantly reads up to 100 tagged items, whether bulked or placed in containers (e.g. boxes, crates), and without opening the container. Data collected from the tags can then be used to update item databases or for real time verification and sorting. http://www.tagsysrfid.com/html/

Chipcon Launches Sub 1GHz Radio and MCU System-on-Chip

Breakthrough Solution for Wireless Payment Systems: Provides reduced cost and development time, and a smaller form factor end product, enabling customers to integrate wireless connectivity into a variety of consumer and industrial applications.
SoC solution ideal for wireless alarm/security systems, home automation, remote controls, wireless payment systems, remote keyless entry (RKE), automatic meter reading and active RFID

CES, Las Vegas - January 5, 2006 -
Chipcon AS, the leading provider of low power, low data rate RF ICs, today launched the CC1110 System-on-Chip (SoC) solution that includes a sub 1GHz RF multi-channel RF transceiver and a single-cycle 8051 MCU. The CC1110's integrated AES-128 co-processor makes it ideal for wireless payment systems, since strong encryption can be done on the chip itself. This improves security compared to having a separate cryptography unit. Using strong cryptography is vital for systems that transmit sensitive information, such as credit card information or other payment details, over the air where it could otherwise be intercepted or tampered with. Even alarm systems or monitoring systems can make use of cryptographic methods to authenticate the other side of the link so that they are sure they are communicating with a legitimate device. http://www.chipcon.com/index.cfm?dok_id=275&kat_id=6

RFID Technology from Texas Instruments Prevents Counterfeit Tickets at Tennis Master Cup 2005 in Shanghai

One of the Largest RFID Ticketing Applications for Sporting Events in China
Dallas, TX (December 19, 2005)
All 100,000 tickets sold for the Tennis Master Cup 2005 in Shanghai, China, held November 13-20 were genuine, thanks to a stadium-wide radio frequency identification (RFID) ticketing system based on high-frequency tags from Texas Instruments Incorporated (NYSE: TXN) (TI). The Ba-Shi Group, which holds the contract to host the event at the Shanghai Qi Zhong stadium from 2005 through 2007, created one of the largest RFID-based anti-counterfeit ticketing applications for sporting events in China. The system, which uses TI’s Tag-it™ HF-I ISO/IEC 15693 inlays incorporated into each ticket, allows event organizers to protect ticket revenues and helps to prevent the use of counterfeit tickets. http://www.ti.com/rfid/docs/news/
