From the editor's desk!
Welcome to the latest issue of the High Tech AIDCourier.
Last month we encountered a new problem in the
distribution of the newsletter. It seems that some of the links in the
newsletter last week triggered some of the aggressive email filters.
Although we check all the links here for validity when we create the
newsletter, we are not able to check that the domain is not blacklisted
somewhere. If you did not get your newsletter last month, that was the
reason. If you don’t get a copy of the newsletter during the month, please
check the web site for the latest issue – it is always listed from the home
page of
http://www.hightechaid.com. This month has been slow in the increase of
new subscribers, so don't forget to encourage your associates to sign up for
their own subscription.
This month we are fortunate to have a guest editorial
from Frost & Sullivan which talks about the use of RFID in distribution
systems. If you have comments on the editorial, please let me know with a
copy to Frost at the address shown below.
Providing this newsletter is just a part of what we
have to offer here at High Tech Aid. When your problem needs have you
overwhelmed, then you need to get help and that is why we are here. We
specialize in education, but the spectrum of services is much greater than
that. Call or email us for more information. Visit the web site
www.hightechaid.com for more information on basic technology details as
well as many other things.
E-mail me at
editor@hightechaid.com and tell us what you think. Don’t forget to send
this issue to your friends so that they can sign up for their own issue of
the free newsletter at
www.hightechaid.com. If you have news to share or info you need, let me
know at
news@hightechaid.com.
Guest Editorial
Global RFID – Distribution Analysis - Parul Oswal, Senior
Research Analyst, Smart Cards and Auto-ID, Frost & Sullivan Asia Pacific.
There are many distribution channels that provide the link
between developers and end users. Distribution channels vary depending on
the type of applications, regions and who the end users are. The reason the
distribution channels are varied is that end users seldom buy stand-alone
RFID systems. They buy it as part of a broader solution, which makes it
harder for RFID manufacturers to sell directly to end users. The various
distribution channels for RFID are:
-
Technology /application developers
-
Original Equipment Manufacturers
-
System Integrators & Value Added Resellers
Technology or application developers are companies who
manufacture RFID systems and develop the technology. Most of them license
their technology to other developers or have OEM agreements or sell directly
to end-users. Original Equipment Manufacturers are especially popular now as
manufacturers offer patented, proprietary technology and can reach a wider
market. SIs and VARs are the preferred means of penetrating the market and
almost all companies are using this channel to reach markets that have not
been tapped yet.
Despite establishment of the above mentioned channels, there
are certain issues that need to be resolved in order to establish proper
distribution channels. These include
-
No dedicated distribution channels
-
Lack of awareness
-
Lack of standards
-
Gap between manufacturer’s claim and what they offer
-
Regional barriers where manufacturers prefer partnering
with local SI or VARs.
In future some new developments may include end users
building their own RFID systems by visiting a manufacturer’s web site.
Trends include:
-
SIs and VARs educating end users on the benefits of RFID
and how it can turn their businesses around
-
Development of standards resulting in interoperability,
thus allowing SIs and VARs to offer complete solutions at much lower
prices
-
End users having the option of choosing custom-specific
solutions

RFID Standards
This month has been relatively quiet in the standards
world. Last month the newsletter had already gone to press when we received
the news that ISO/IEC 18000-6 AM1 had been published. This amendment to ISO/IEC
18000 contains the information on Type C (equivalent to EPCglobal™ Gen 2
v1.1.0) as an amendment to the standard. You will need both the original
standard and the amendment if you are interested in looking at this
standard. The Amendment also contains some changes to the Type A
specification.
If you are interested in any of the above or want more
information, contact me at
standards@hightechaid.com.
