From the editor's desk!
Welcome to the latest issue of the High Tech AIDCourier.
Even though I took a week of vacation with my family this month, it
seems the news just keeps on coming. There’s plenty of it this month
with many things happening in the RFID world.
I attended a meeting last night with a talk given by the Center for
Democracy and Technology; an excellent discussion on RFID and Privacy.
This organization seems to have got it right and is trying to find a
means to address the real privacy concerns without the stupid “spy in
the sky” type discussions. Take a peek at their web site (http://www.cdt.org/privacy/20060501rfid-best-practices.php)
and the draft white paper “Privacy Best Practices for Deployment of RFID
Technology”. See if you agree with their ideas and let them know.
Providing this newsletter is just a part of what we have to offer here
at High Tech Aid. When your problem needs have you overwhelmed, then you
need to get help and that is why we are here. We specialize in
education, but the spectrum of services is much greater than that. Call
or email us for more information. Visit the web site
www.hightechaid.com for more information on basic technology details
as well as many other things.
E-mail me at
editor@hightechaid.com and tell us what you think. Don’t forget to
send this issue to your friends so that they can sign up for their own
issue of the free newsletter at
www.hightechaid.com. If you have news to share or info you need, let
me know at
news@hightechaid.com.
RFID Standards
During May we had the Plenary of ISO/IEC SC31. This is the ISO
committee responsible for the standardization all AIDC technologies. The
plenary took place in Moscow, Russia. The meeting is a forum for all the
working groups in SC31 to give a report of their progress for the last
year.
The meeting went well. The output from the plenary is a set of
resolutions to move the work of the committee forward. Key resolutions
adopted this year include: assignment of project editors, agreement on
liaisons for the committee with other standards bodies, acceptance of
the business plan, agreement of the next meeting (June 2007 in South
Africa), and a discussion on Intellectual Property.
Among the agreements on liaisons were one with IEEE and one with
EPCglobal™. Both are key so that we can more closely align the work of
various groups and ensure we get standards that work with each other.
The discussion on IP revolved around the situation regarding the IP that
is claimed against ISO/IEC 18000-6 AM1 and the fact that publication is
being delayed by this claim. SC31have asked ISO to investigate better to
determine if there is a problem with the current system.
This meeting was to have also been a celebration of the fact that one
man has been the chair of the group for the last 12 years. He has
brought the committee from obscurity into an ISO committee that has
published 45 standards and is working on more (ten more are scheduled
for publication in 2006). This was to have been his last plenary at the
chair as he is stepping down, but unfortunately he was unable to attend
due to sickness. Many of you will know or will have heard of Alan
Haberman, and I am sure you will join me in wishing him a speedy
recovery, and thanking him for all the work he has done over the past 12
years. We also should welcome Chuck Biss as the new chairman of SC31 and
look forward to the next 12 years.
If you need more specific information on any of this work, let me
know.
If you want more information on ISO standardization or on any issue
of RFID standardization, then email
