From the editor's desk!
Welcome to the latest issue of the High Tech AIDCourier.
Another interesting month and as I sit on the plane returning from the
EPCglobal US conference I was thinking of what I had seen and heard.
Checkpoint has backed out of the RFID market completely, laying off all the
RFID people; Sirit hires two new senior people (Tony Sabetti and Bruce
Roesner) and lays off a bunch of RFID people; Wal-Mart announces its plans
for next year and they are not seen as pushing as hard by the people that
attended the meetings. The conference was not a show stopper (the conference
sessions I attended were ho-hum, and the show floor was a bust – almost
nothing new). Are we falling backwards on the growth curve? It seems that I
starting to hear more of that hype that I thought we had left behind us some
time ago, and when a major supplier to Wal-Mart says they are not pushing
ahead as the ROI is just not there, where does that leave us?
But: the news is not all so grim. I am starting to hear more and more
non-supply chain applications that are being implemented that have great
ROIs and the vendor and the user are both enjoying a good return on the
projects. Are we just expecting too much too quickly in the supply chain
arena? It took us 25 years to get bar codes right.

RFID Standards
The standards’ world continues to move on and we have seem more changes
this month with several meetings during the month that have progressed their
work. In the ISO world, the data side of things has taken a major step
forward: (If you need more information on the stages of development in ISO
standards see
http://www.hightechaid.com/stdsupdate/standards_updates.
htm)
- ISO/IEC 24752 has been renumbered as ISO/IEC 24791 - Information
technology - Automatic Identification and Data Capture Techniques- Radio
Frequency Identification (RFID) for Item Management - System Management
Protocol – now a six part document.
- ISO/IEC 24791 - Information technology - Automatic Identification
and Data Capture Techniques - Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) for
Item Management – Software System Infrastructure – Part 1: Architecture
has been sent to CD ballot
- ISO/IEC 24753 Information Technology, Automatic Identification and
Data Capture Techniques – Radio frequency identification (RFID) for item
management – Application protocol: encoding and processing rules for
sensors and batteries has been sent to CD ballot
- ISO/IEC 18000-8 Part 8: Parameters for uni-directional air interface
communications using propagation (UHF & Microwave) or inductive (LF)
carriers failed an NP ballot due to concerns about interference and the
applications it was intended for.
- ISO/IEC 18000-7 Part 7: Parameters for active RFID air interface
communications at 433 MHz has been sent to FDIS ballot
- ISO/IEC 24729 Implementation guidelines – Part 1: RFID-enabled
labels and Part 2: Recyclability of RF tags, both passed a PDTR ballot
In the EPCglobal™ world, work on setting the requirements for battery
assisted passive tags and sensor enabled tags, active tags, and the user of
extended memory on passive tags are all moving ahead. Both the UHF and HF
workgroups are moving ahead with their air interface protocols
specifications. Several other specifications are entering the final stages
of their work and we should expect to see announcements in the coming
months. EPCglobal™ also announced certification of a group of companies for
their various products.
If you need more specific information on any of this work, let me know.
