From the editor's desk!

Welcome to the latest issue of the High Tech AIDCourier.

As the summer ticks by we continue to see the news flying in. As I put this issue to bed, the news has just reached me that Motorola has agreed to purchase Symbol Technologies Inc. for $3.9 billion in cash. I ask myself if this is the start of the future in AIDC. Many people have asked me over the years who will be the big players in RFID and my answer has always been the same – “none of the current players”. We are in a young market and I would expect that as the market gets sorted out, those companies that are successful will be bought up by the big players in the IT world as they fight to get a grip on this new technology.

Motorola is one of those companies that has been in and out of the AIDC market over the years, but has not made a move to be a major player. Look for more of these types of acquisitions in the future. One analyst is already speculating that Intermec may be bought by Nokia or Ericcson. Active RFID tag Technology

by Parul Oswal, Senior Research Analyst, Smart Cards and Auto-ID, Frost & Sullivan Asia Pacific

Interest in RFID is growing day by day, and with the increase in product capabilities and the reduction in cost, there is even talk of it replacing some existing technologies. Although this is too distant in the future and RFID has still a long way to go, there are some applications where RFID is better than existing technologies.

RFID can operate with the use of battery (active) or without the battery (passive). Passive technology is used for mainly low cost applications, as this is less expensive, compared to active technology that is more expensive ($3.0-$20.0) and is mainly used for high end application. Some of the application active RFID is used is tracking of baggage, airports, transport of frozen food and pharmacy, products, container, and others where identification and data transmission everywhere with greater distances is needed. Active tags are useful, where identification with passive RFID technology is not possible because of reasons dealing with distances and flexibility. Furthermore is a great number of measurement data to transmit to any time and from any place, especially by moving objects.

The demand for active technology is low currently because of its high price. However their prices are rapidly falling and hence this trend is a deterrent to many large chip manufacturers that would like to enter this business. The revenue for active tags is expected to increase from around $0.75 billion to $4 billion from 2005 to 2010. The active tags as a percentage of revenue of hardware (including active and passive tags, and RFID readers) was more than 50% globally in 2005.
