Steve Halliday

From the editor's desk!

Welcome to the latest issue of the High Tech AIDCourier.

I am putting the finishing touches to this newsletter as I sit on a plane bound for the RFID Journal Live show in Las Vegas. The last time I was in Vegas was a for a small RFID conference on "RFID and Healthcare". At this year's Journal Live show, I expect to see many vendors showcasing applications that can be used in the healthcare market as well as many other markets.

The show looks like being an interesting chance to catch up on the technology and I will give a summary of the show floor in the next issue.

Are you interested in sponsoring the newsletter?  Drop me a note to editor@hightechaid.com and let me know.

Providing this newsletter is just a part of what we have to offer here at High Tech Aid. When your problem needs have you overwhelmed, then you need to get help and that is why we are here. Technology News Briefs

RFID Standards

A month of interesting standards work has shown that we are still seeing a lot of change in the standards world. This means that the technology is far from standing still. A meeting in Europe of the ISO group working on air interface standards (ISO/IEC 18000 series) highlighted a lot of development. The major part of the work was on a review of the new changes to the part 6 (UHF) document. This standard includes the ISO equivalent of the EPCglobal™ Gen 2 standard (as Type C).

The ISO group has been hard at work to take the standard to a new level with the introduction of support for sensors and battery assisted passive technology. The goal is to remain completely compatible with the current Gen 2 while adding new layers of functionality. This new work will be wrapped into a new draft of the document and sent for FCD ballot. For details on the ISO ballot stages see http://www.hightechaid.com/standards/how_does_iso_work.
htm. This ballot should start by July 1, 2008 which means that the comments to the document will be reviewed in November.

Other work at these meetings included approval of new drafts for CD ballot for parts 2 (low frequency) and 7 (433 MHz active). Both documents contain new improvements to the currently published standards. Finally in the air interface work group an ad-hoc was established to create a new draft of part 3 (HF) to include a new Mode (3) which will be the equivalent of the new EPCglobal™ HF standard. This will be ready for CD ballot by August.

Other meetings that took place during this week of ISO meetings included work on the various RFID and RTLS conformance and performance standards as well as the first meeting of a new workgroup looking at Mobile Item Identification.

If you want more information on ISO standardization or on any issue of RFID standardization, then email steve@hightechaid.com.
