From the editor's desk!
Welcome to the latest issue of the High Tech AIDCourier.
It seems like I was only just writing the January 2007 issue
of the newsletter, and here we are in 2007. Back then we were talking about
the Zebra acquisition of WhereNet and the Motorola acquisition of Symbol. It
looked like it might be a year of mergers and acquisitions which was not as
noticeable as we thought, though Honeywell's acquisition of Hand Held
Products was certainly a biggie. This year I believe we will continue to see
more consolidation, but we also see the impact of the closed loop
application. These applications are not always the small sibling of the open
loop application and they are just as important. Many large applications
will be announced this year.
We are still looking for another sponsor for the newsletter,
so if your company would like to be a sponsor, please give me a buzz at
editor@hightechaid.com.
Providing this newsletter is just a part of what we have to
offer here at High Tech Aid. When your problem needs have you overwhelmed,
then you need to get help and that is why we are here. We specialize in
education, but the spectrum of services is much greater than that. Call or
email us for more information. Visit the web site
www.hightechaid.com for more
information on basic technology details as well as many other things.
E-mail me at
editor@hightechaid.com and tell us what you think. Don’t forget to send
this issue to your friends so that they can sign up for their own issue of
the free newsletter at
www.hightechaid.com. If you have news to share or info you need, let me
know at news@hightechaid.com.
Technology News Briefs
RFID Standards
Well, 2007 started with a bang with several standards groups meeting the
first full week people were back in their office. We saw meetings of MH10.8,
the AIM RFID Experts Group, SC31/WG4, SC31 WG4/SG1 and SC31 WG4/SG5.
MH10.8 is concerned about Automatic Identification of Packages and
Unit-Loads. This covers many applications including cases, cartons, unit
loads, and containers. MH10 acts as the Technical Advisory Group (TAG) to
ISO TC 122 Packaging. This group is looking hard at harmonizing their ANSI
standards with the standards of others including ISO.
The AIM RFID Experts Group works on a range of subjects and has provided
draft standards into SC31 WG4/SG1 on subjects like security, implementation
of UHF RFID, RFID labels and packaging using 18000-6C, and Recycling.
SC31 WG4 is the parent committee for RFID in SC31. All of the various
RFID groups report into this committee.
If you want more information on ISO standardization or on any issue of
RFID standardization, then email
steve@hightechaid.com.
