From the Editor's Desk

Steve HallidayWelcome to the latest issue of the High Tech AIDCourier.

It has been a busy month with lots of travel to standards meetings and a conference/trade show. The RFID Journal Live was a good show with plenty of old friends attending. I spoke on standards as part of the AIDC 100 event, and though it wasn't the largest crowd I have spoken to, the questions were good and the interest was high.

The trade show felt smaller than previous years and I gather than attendance was also down. Of course that is probably to be expected in our current economic climate, but it also may be because people are not attending trade shows as much anymore. The response I had from the vendors who had booths was a little mixed with some unhappy and others very happy with the traffic they saw.

In a few weeks time I will be attending a vertical market trade show (Omtec) and I will let you know if the feeling is different.

RFID Standards

We have seen a lot of standards meetings this month, and a lot of progress has been made in those meetings. As many of you know, the ISO process has several stages of balloting that allow the international community to reach consensus, and this month we have had several Ballot Resolution Meetings (BRM). These meetings allow the community to look at all the comments made by everyone else and work towards getting a better standard.

The meetings that took place included BRMs for:

• ISO/IEC 15961-1 Radio frequency (RFID) for item management: Data protocol — Part 1: Application interface
• ISO/IEC 15961-2 Radio frequency identification (RFID) for item management: Data protocol — Part 2: Registration of RFID data constructs
• ISO/IEC 15961-3 Radio frequency identification (RFID) for item management – Part 3: Data protocol: RFID data constructs
• ISO/IEC 15962 Radio frequency identification (RFID) for item management — Data protocol: data encoding rules and logical memory functions
• ISO/IEC 18000-6 Radio frequency identification for item management — Part 6: Parameters for air interface communications at 860 MHz to 960 MHz
• ISO/IEC 18047-7 Radio frequency identification for item management — Part 7: Test methods for active air interface communications at 433 MHz
• ISO/IEC 24791-1 Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) for item management -- Software system infrastructure
• ISO/IEC 29143 Automatic identification and data capture techniques — Air interface specification for Mobile RFID interrogators

In each case the committee reviewed all of the comments and attempted to reach conclusions that were acceptable to everyone. In some cases the committee did not finish the work at the meeting and so another meeting will be held in the coming weeks.

As well as these BRMs, there were also meetings of the following SC31 subgroups: WG4/SG1, WG4/SG3, WG4/SG6, and WG6.
