From the Editor's Desk

Steve HallidayWelcome to the latest issue of the High Tech AIDCourier.

Summer is almost over and the market seems to be going through some revivals as the economy starts to pull out of its decline. I am writing this as I sit on a plane returning from standards meetings in the UK. The meetings moved us forward on a collection of standards (see below), and we can look forward to another round of ballots as we move closer to publication of the standards. RFID has come a long way in the standards world and there really is little excuse for not conforming to ISO standards in your implementation of RFID today.

Are you interested in sponsoring the newsletter? Drop me a note to editor@hightechaid.com and let me know.

E-mail me at editor@hightechaid.com and tell us what you think. Don’t forget to send this issue to your friends so that they can sign up for their own issue of the free newsletter at www.hightechaid.com. If you have news to share or info you need, let me know at news@hightechaid.com.

RFID Standards

As I mentioned above, I am just returning from another round of RFID standards work . We started the week exploring the conformance/performance of RFID with work on ISO/IEC18046 and 18047. The Ballot Resolution Meetings for 18046 -1 and -2 resulted in a lot of very spirited discussion on the comments and the decision to send the documents back for a 2nd CD ballot after the project editor has added all of the changes to the document. We also agreed to have a draft of new ISO/IEC 18047-3 (HF Conformance) as well as sending 18047-6 (UHF Conformance) to PDTR ballot.

In the WG7 (RFID Security and File Management) significant progress on a working draft of the new standard (ISO/IEC 29167). The document should be ready to enter the balloting stages sometime after the next meeting.

Finally we worked on the BRMs for ISO/IEC 24753, 24791-2, 24791-3, and 24791-5. Part 2 was sent to FCD ballot, part 3 was sent back for 2nd CD, and part 5 was sent to FDIS. The BRM for 24753 was not completed due to the complexities of interacting with ISO/IEC 18000-6 and IEEE 1451-7. It seems that handling sensors with RFID in a standardized way is going to be well thought through.

If you want more information on ISO standardization or on any issue of RFID standardization, then email steve@hightechaid.com.
