From the Editor's Desk

Steve HallidayWelcome to the latest issue of the High Tech AIDCourier.

Another month flies by and we see that the news continues to flow. As I mentioned last month, we are now including information on the “Internet of Things” as a separate topic. You will note the massive amount of news that is being generated in this arena.

I have been asked a couple of times about IoT and what it means. My answer is an easy one – have you ever watched Star Trek on the TV (or a movie). Think about how they have instant access to everything. For us in the real world there are two issues, the ability to connect to every physical thing and the ability to communicate. The communication side is currently being driven by the telecommunication companies and their ability to provide us with a ubiquitous connection seems to be a long way off sometimes.

The ability to communicate with things is something that is being defined/reviewed/standardized by several groups at the technology level. These groups are looking at all the aspects of the connection technologies including the security and privacy side. If you need more information on this work then let me know.

As a part of a European funded project on the IoT, I am looking for some U.S. based projects that can be featured in the report to show what is happening here in the U.S. If you are involved in something then let me know.

If you just want to know more about the IoT then think about attending the seminar in Chicago during on November 1, 2010 at the AIM Expo (http://www.aim-expo.com)

If you have colleagues who do not get their own copy of this newsletter, then tell them to go to  http://www.hightechaid.com/newsletter/newsletter.htm where they can sign up for their own copy.

RFID Standards

Since last month’s newsletter, the work on standardization of security and file management for RFID has been progressing at a very fast pace. Many phone call meetings have taken place during this last month with many ideas being put forward for how to achieve the security at multiple levels in an RFID tag.

If you want more information on ISO standardization or on any issue of RFID standardization, then email steve@hightechaid.com.
