From the Editor's Desk

Steve HallidayWelcome to the latest issue of the High Tech AIDCourier.

This has been a busy month for me and for many in the world of AIDC. There is plenty of news this month and lots of opportunities for business. I have just returned from a set of meetings where we are discussing how to solve some of the issues around security of the data in RFID tags and the associated privacy issues. The discussions have been eye-opening regarding the directions we are moving in with the technology.

I have also spent some time testing UHF tags for a new application that we are working on for asset tracking. Two things have struck me during this testing: 1 – Some of the tags that have been designed to mount on metal really do work very well, and 2 – The new Impinj Monza 4 chips on a properly designed antennas have amazing performance characteristics (it is easy to see why RFID Journal Live gave them an award for the best in the show).

I am beginning to see a recovery in our industry. The amount of inquiries for systems is increasing and I am pleased to see that there are more implementations being announced all the time.

RFID Standards

May is a busy month for standards with the SC31 Plenary in Beijing fast approaching. There has been a flurry of work in progress as various groups are getting ready for the Plenary and the other meetings that will take place at the same time.

There has been an overhaul of the procedure that JTC 1 uses to create standards and between now and the change date in July, I along with others will be putting in a lot of work to make sure we understand the implications. You will be able to check my web site in the next few months as I update the pages related to the process of creating a standard in the JTC 1 arena.

Since the last newsletter there has been work on ISO/IEC 29167 (RFID Security) and ISO/IEC 20017 (RFID effect on Implantable Medical Devices) as we work to fill out the information in these documents.

If you want more information on ISO standardization or on any issue of RFID standardization, then email steve@hightechaid.com.
