From the Editor's Desk

Steve HallidayWelcome to the latest issue of the High Tech AIDCourier.

Are you coming to the AIM Expo? This new trade show and conference (http://www.aim-expo.com/) is the event to be at this year. I will be making two presentations (standards and The Internet of Things) on Monday 1 November. There will also be a dinner on Wednesday night to celebrate the top awards of the industry. Make sure you are there to see the Dilling, Percival, Williams and Journalism awards presented to this year’s winners. The winners are still a secret, so it could be you! I will be making one of the presentations.

Last month I was in Toulouse France for a series of standards meetings (more below). While there, we were invited to attend a conference talking about RFID. As part of the conference we got the chance to visit with Airbus and see how they are using RFID. It was fascinating to see how a company has taken RFID into all of its processes and integrated it with the manufacturing. I believe this is an example for many companies of how you can really use RFID to benefit business.

Finally, for those of you reading in an RSS reader, I apologize. I have just discovered a problem with the feed that meant the last two issues had July 2010 as the date rather than the correct month. That should be fixed now.

RFID Standards

Last month we met in Toulouse France to work on standards for RFID. The SC31 groups that met were WG4/SG1, WG4/SG3, WG4/SG6 and WG7.

These groups discussed the following standards:
ISO/IEC 24753 - Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) for Item Management - Application protocol: encoding and processing rules for sensors and batteries
ISO/IEC 24791-4 - Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) for Item Management - Software System Infrastructure – Part 4: Application interface,
ISO/IEC 15961 - RFID for Item Management – Data protocol
ISO/IEC 15962 - RFID for Item Management – Protocol: Data encoding rules and logical memory functions
ISO/IEC 18000-3 - Radio-frequency identification for item management Part 3: Parameters for air interface communications at 13,56 MHz
ISO/IEC 18000-6 - Radio-frequency identification for item management Part 6: Parameters for air interface communications at 860 – 960 MHz
ISO/IEC 18000-7 - Radio-frequency identification for item management Part 7: Parameters for active RFID air interface communications at 433 MHz
ISO/IEC 18046-1 - RFID Tag and Interrogator Performance Test Methods - Part 1: Test methods for system performance
ISO/IEC 18046-2 - RFID Tag and Interrogator Performance Test Methods Part 2: Test methods for interrogator performance
ISO/IEC 18047-2 - RFID device conformance test methods for ISO/IEC 18000 Part 2 - Parameters for Air Interface Communications below 135 kHz
ISO/IEC 18047-3 - RFID device conformance test methods for ISO/IEC 18000 Part 3 - Parameters for Air Interface Communications at 13.56 MHz
ISO/IEC 18047-6 - RFID device conformance test methods for ISO/IEC 18000 Part 6 - Parameters for Air Interface Communications at 860-960 MHz
ISO/IEC 18047-7 - Radio RFID device conformance test methods for ISO/IEC 18000 Part 7 - Parameters for an Active RFID Air Interface Communications at 433 MHz
ISO/IEC 29167-1 - Automatic identification and data capture techniques — Part 1: Air Interface for security services and file management for RFID architecture
ISO/IEC 29167-6 - Part 6: Air Interface for security services and file management for RFID at 860 – 960 MHz

Each one of these documents was reviewed in some way. Many progressed on to the next stage in the process.
